India has one of the world's largest creator populations, from full-time influencers with millions of followers to home sellers whose 'content' is their daily menu.
Creators span comedy, food, finance, tech reviews, beauty, fitness, devotional content, regional-language entertainment and education. The fastest growth has been in Indian languages — Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam — and in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
Below the famous names sits a much larger layer of nano and micro creators with a few thousand followers, often trusted more by their neighbourhood than any celebrity.
Brand collaborations and sponsored posts are the main income, followed by platform payouts (YouTube ad revenue, Instagram bonuses where offered), affiliate links, their own products and courses, paid communities and live-stream gifts. Many creators are also sellers: a cooking creator sells masalas, a fitness creator sells plans.
Talent agencies and multi-channel networks represent creators, negotiate brand deals, handle contracts and payments, and sometimes produce content. Larger agencies run their own creator rosters across languages; many small managers work with a handful of creators each.
The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) guidelines ask creators to label paid promotions clearly — for example with #ad or #sponsored. The Consumer Protection Act and the Department of Consumer Affairs' guidelines on endorsements place responsibility on endorsers for misleading claims. Financial and health content attracts extra scrutiny from SEBI and the regulators concerned.
