The social media industry in India

India is the largest market in the world for several social platforms, and social media here is not only entertainment. It is where a large part of small business, local services and personal commerce now happens — a home cook's tiffin, a blouse tailor's orders, a karigar's custom jewellery, a nanny's placement, a wedding band's bookings. The industry has layers: the platforms; the creators who make content and sell through it; the agencies and freelancers who run accounts for brands; the tools and payments underneath; the rules that govern it; and the millions of home sellers for whom an Instagram page and a WhatsApp number are the whole shop.

This site covers the industry in plain language — platforms, creators, agencies, tools, rules, careers — and then does something useful with the last layer.

Find sellers on social media

Home sellers are scattered across thousands of Instagram pages and Facebook groups, with no central place to search them. Here they are gathered by city and category — 102 categories in 21 cities. Pick a city, tap Instagram or Facebook beside any category, and see the real sellers live.

How the industry flows

  1. Platforms — WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Indian apps — carry the audience.
  2. Creators and sellers make content and take orders on them.
  3. Agencies and freelancers run accounts, campaigns and production for brands.
  4. Tools and payments — scheduling, influencer platforms, WhatsApp Business, UPI — make it work.
  5. Rules — IT rules, ASCI codes, consumer and data law — set the limits.
  6. Buyers find the sellers — which is where the Find sellers section comes in.
