Social media in India is governed by IT rules, advertising codes, consumer law and data protection law; buyers and sellers also need everyday safety habits.
The Information Technology Act and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules set duties for platforms on grievance handling, takedowns and traceability for significant intermediaries. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act sets rules for handling personal data.
ASCI's codes cover misleading ads and influencer disclosure. Food sellers need an FSSAI registration or licence depending on turnover. GST applies above the thresholds. Consumer protection law applies to online sales, including those made through social media.
Buy with small first orders. Pay by UPI after delivery where possible, and avoid large advances to someone you have not met. Read comments and tagged posts, not only the seller's own posts. For anyone coming into your home — nannies, maids, drivers, carers — check ID and references, and register with the local police where required. Never share OTPs or card details in chat.
